  • Anaheim Landing from Above

    I’ve spent the past week organizing and labeling the image files of Seal Beach aerial photographs that I’ve accumulated over the past 25 years. This chore requires my reviewing every aerial photo scan I made or used in the early 2000s for the newsletter of the now shamefully defunct Seal Beach Historical & Cultural Society, various historical slide shows that I’ve given over the past two decades, and the thirteen years I’ve been doing this blog.

    In the process of formatting and reformatting these images for these various projects, I’ve amassed a monstrous number of duplicate image files in different sizes and file formats. All of these have to be pruned from the collection and care must be taken not to dump any unique images, so this has been a slow and methodical process.

    The ultimate long-term goal is to have an organized, dated, and annotated archive of the highest quality version of all the Seal Beach historical image in my collection (not just the aerial shots) preserved and available for future generations and researchers in Photoshop, TIFF, PNG, and JPEG formats.

    The short term goal is to have all these Seal Beach aerial photographs prepared and consistently labeled for use for the new blog posts I’ll started writing next month to stockpile for the relaunch of fresh daily This Date in Seal Beach History posts on January 1st, 2025. I’ve been researching different dates the past six months, and it’s now time to add a writing schedule to the research so that I’m not rushing to write a new post every single day in 2025.

    This is the point where, once again, I must switch into pledge drive mode. My bare minimum costs for the rest of 2023 for research subscriptions and photo editing software comes to $200 — more if I can afford to add a genealogy subscription for research and/or a Zoom subscription for monthly online Seal Beach history slide shows.

    (To make up for my crass solicitation for funds for this project, here’s an examination of one the aerial photos I worked on this past week.)


    The photo below is an early aerial photographs of Seal Beach taken from an airplane banking over the Crawford Airport that once stood at the State Highway (now Pacific Coast Highway) and Bay Boulevard (now Seal Beach Boulevard.) Along the top of the photograph, you can see a bit of a pre-Navy Anaheim Bay with scores of cottages and homes along the shore. In the top right you can see the Pacific Electric bridge that the P.E. red cars used to cross Anaheim Bay from Electric Avenue on their way down the coast to Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Balboa. Just past that, you can barely see a second separate bridge that made the same crossing for auto traffic.

    One might assume that this is one of the earliest aerial photographs of Seal Beach. The original photo which was in the historical society’s archive had a simple unsourced notation on the back of “1920s” on the back in pencil. Personally, I’ve never found any Seal Beach aerial photos that can be definitively dated to the teens of the Twentieth Century, so this being one of the earliest aerial shots of the city is an easy assumption to make.

    Ah, but if you look closer, you can spot the original location of the Glide ‘er Inn at the corner of Bay Boulevard and Coast Highway.

    (It may be my imagination, but I see the faint shape of an airplane atop at derrick-like structure on the corner. Could this be the original spot where the icon Glide ‘er Inn airplane was set up before being moved to the top of the restaurant building?)

    Now, as anyone with a scan of a late 1970s/early 1980s Glide ‘er Inn menu on their hard drive can tell you, the restaurant was launched in 1930. So this photo couldn’t have been taken in the twenties.

    This means the photo was most likely taken in the thirties, and definitely before the Navy took over Anaheim Landing in 1944. So we can date this photo in a range from 1930 to 1944.

    Other details in the photo stand out and are worth a closer look.

    It’s hard to make out details in such a dark and murky resolution, but the airport appears to be busy. There are three airplanes on the ground outside the hangar, plus the one in the air used to take this photograph. I count five cars parked along a railing that runs parallel to Bay Boulevard and then turns to meet hangar. It’s hard to tell what the dark patch that the hangar stands upon — it could be asphalt or some sort of grass. In the upper left you can see curved grooves made by wheels where airplane turned on the dirt runway before take-offs and after landings.

    The hangar in this photo is not the same on seen in later photos of the airport. The Seal Beach Airport shut down in 1933, and this hangar was removed and reinstalled in Long Beach. When the airport reopened (possibly as late as 1937!), a new hangar was built closer to Bay Boulevard, and the dirt runway was paved as seen in this earlier post from 2010.

    Based on the presence of the Glide ‘er Inn and the first airport hangar, we can now narrow the date range for this photo from 1930 to 1933. I don’t think it’ll be possible to pinpoint the year or date any more accurately than that.

    On the right edge of the photo, you can see a teeny speck of a car driving down Bay Boulevard where, in less than forty years, second-stage Apollo Saturn rockets will be trucked to Anaheim Bay for sea transport to Mississippi for testing and then onward to Cape Kennedy to launch Apollo missions to the moon. It’s possible that the pilots at the airport and the driver of the car in this vintage photograph lived to see Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon in 1969 on color televisions.

    Finally, let’s pause to look a little closer at two building along the bay and next to the Pacific Electric bridge.

    You might recognize these two buildings from a different angle in famous Seal Beach panorama shot from 1917.

    Or you might not. A WordPress blog is probably not the best way to present details in a panorama photo. Let’s take a closer look at the righthand side of the photo.

    Note the Anaheim Landing Bowling Alleys building behind the bathing beauties. This is the same building on the right highlighted in the oval from 1930s photo blow-up three images up. Just past it, you can see the top of the roof of the second building.

    And here’s a pre-1913 photo featuring the front of the two buildings facing Anaheim Bay from before Bay City was rebranded as Seal Beach.

    We’re looking at the Anaheim Landing Bowling Alleys and the Anaheim Landing Pavilion where the locals and tourists went to have a good time before the roller coaster and the Joy Zone amusement attractions were built in 1916 along the beachfront.

    The Bay City name was a reference to the convenient access to Anaheim Bay on the east and Alamitos Bay on the west. Part of the competitive advantage the Bayside Land Company was pushing to visitors and potential real estate buyers was that Bay City offered not one, but two bays to fulfill their aquatic recreational needs! (Take that, all you crummy single bay towns!)

    As charming as that notion was, the name was too generic to make much of a promotional impression and only lasted from 1904 until 1913 when the area was rebranded as the more romantic “Seal Beach.” The Seal Beach name became official when the city incorporated in 1915.

    I think this demonstrates how invaluable these aerial photos are, not just for capturing a single moment in time, but also for how they connect with other vintage images to create a wide historical landscape of Seal Beach’s past.

    Or… that all could just be a fancy and pretentious way of saying, “Mikey like looking at old photos.” I’ll let you decide.

  • Have a Merry Seal Beach Christmas

    Merry Christmas to all Seal Beach residents and visitors both past and present, across the planet and on the ships at sea!

    There is plenty of work and preparation going on for the site’s relaunch in 2024, but sharing the details will have to wait. We’ve charged up the flux capacitor and are about to pop into the DeLorean for a turkey dinner with walnuts, dressing, cranberry sauce and musical accompaniment by Jimmie Means on the Hammond organ at Sam’s Seafood in 1963.

    It’s a little pricey, but the parking is free.

  • October 7th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1941, the Long Beach Independent reported that Sam’s Seafood at 2501 Pacific Coast Highway had recently opened a new building in the back to handle its overflow crowds of weekend diners. The new 30 by 94 feet addition could accommodate 200 patrons and also featured an orchestra and a floor show. The new addition would be christened The Neptune Room.

  • September 30th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1971, the following ad ran in the Long Beach Independent for the Ranch House Restaurant.

    The ad offered fine dining and entertainment by Bill Clark, a pianist and organist who sang and played pop hits and Broadway showtunes at various local Long Beach restaurants like The Embers, Alexander’s, Lucy’s, and Hoefly’s.

    The Ranch House Restaurant was once known as the Dovalis 101 Ranch House Cafe, and you can see and learn more about its long history by clicking on this July 20, 1940 post, this December 16, 1941 post on the Dovalis Ranch House Cafe doing its bit for the war effort in the weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack, this May 24, 1963 post about the restaurant’s brief time as The Eddie Bush Mauna Kea, this August 3, 1967 post covering the 101 Ranch House’s Greek period under the Smyrniotis family, and finally this May 6, 1975 post reminding good sons and daughters to make early reservations for Mother’s Day.

  • September 28th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1946, Ralph Henry Lawrence, a 45 year old toolmaker from Clearwater plead guilty to a felonious assault charge and received ten years probation and was ordered to pay a $360 fine at the rate of $10 a month.

    This ad ran in the Long Beach Independent exactly five years to the day before Ralph Henry Lawrence’s day in court. There’s no special significance to this coincidence. It’s just fun to run old Sam’s Seafood advertisements.

    On July 13th Lawrence had attempted a hold-up of Sam’s Seafood Grotto. Instead of making a clean getaway with some loot, Lawrence was severely beaten by the restaurant’s owner, George B. Arvanitis.  The irony of pleading guilty to felonious assault when you were the one severely beaten perhaps contributed to the leniency of the sentence.

  • September 9th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1938, this ad in the Santa Ana Register offer two choice places for dining, dancing and entertainment, Vivian Laird’s South Seas and Vivian Laird’s Garden of Allah in Seal Beach.  In spite of there being WOMEN CHEFS at South Seas, the people in the illustration for the Garden of Allah look like they’re having more fun.

    There were many owners of the Garden of Allah after Vivian Laird, and the lot has hosted a number of establishments including very briefly a church, a Jack in the Box for decades, and the recently closed Fresh & Easy.

  • August 26th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1937, Hal Ross launched the 1937 Derby Show on a triangle of land between Coast Highway and Hathaway Avenue in Seal Beach, probably in a large circus big top type tent.

    To save the curious reader the trouble of pulling out (or googling) a map to look for Hathaway Avenue, there is no road by that name in Seal Beach today. Hathaway Avenue was built in 1931 and branched off from Coast Highway to offer a more inland route from Seal Beach into Long Beach, mostly through oilfields, where it connected with State Street — yet another street you won’t find on a modern street map of Long Beach.

    This is probably still confusing because it’s difficult to picture where a road could branch off from Coast Highway in today’s Seal Beach. It would be easy to assume that Hathaway Avenue (sometimes called the Hathaway cut-off) was re-graded, built over and no longer exists. But It does still exist as shown in the photo below.

Hathaway Ave stretched from 8th Street in Seal Beach all the way up to the Traffic Circle in Long Beach where it connects with State Street. Both Hathaway Ave and State Street are now called Pacific Coast Highway. (There’s still a bit of Hathaway Avenue just past the Traffic Circle that stretches towards Signal Hill.)

    In 1931, Coast Highway was not today’s Pacific Coast Highway. Beyond 8th Street, we now call it Marina Drive and it used to connect to Long Beach through Naples. This isn’t even the original Coast Highway route through Seal Beach, which used to run down Main Street to Central Avenue to Central Way along the marshy edge of Alamitos Bay that had since been filled with landfill as detailed in this post.

    That’s a long digression before shifting to the real focus of today’s post — the “1937 Derby Show.”  This event was called many things, a derby show, a walkashow, and a walkathon, but regardless of what it was called, the event operated under the principles of a dance-a-thon, a controversial form of public entertainment that was wildly popular during the twenties and the thirties. These events were the spiritual ancestors of roller derbies, televised wrestling, and much of today’s reality TV competitions.

    The details vary, but the dance-a-thons were endurance tests that lasted for weeks. A set number of contestants were chosen (sometimes with ringers from management mixed in) to compete for a large cash prize. The rules for dancing were strictly enforced — no shuffling, feet must leave the ground or the contestants would be counted out of the competition. At first, there would be a ten minute rest period for every hour, but as time wore on, a minute would be shaved off the rest period until there was no break from dance. Popular entertainers were brought in to provide live music for the dancers, the crowd of ticket buyers, and sometimes even a radio audience. When the event started to become monotonous, the promoters would stage a marriage proposal between contestants or manufacture a drama or contrive a short-term contest to test the mettle of the exhausted sleep-deprived contestants.

    The dance-a-thon craze was not without its critics. Doctors were concerned about the health effects of these endurance tests and a contestant had even died from a heart attack during a dance-a-thon. Some people found these events vulgar and seamy like a sideshow carnival. Many of the operators were scam artists, rigging the winners and sometimes even skipping town without paying anyone. This aspect of the dance-a-thons became even more pronounced in the thirties when desperate and out of work Americans were attracted to the large cash payouts. Winners ended up with a nice little nest egg. The losers had just wasted weeks of their lives and had worked their bodies and minds to the point of exhaustion and burnout — all for nothing.

    In spite of the popularity of these events, laws were passed to either limit or outlaw dance-a-thon endurance test competitions. Promoters tried modifying these events just enough, they hoped, to bypass the new laws while still providing the same entertainment value. They also rebranded them as walkashow, walk marathons, and even derby shows.

    On August 4th, 1937, the Seal Beach city council passed a walk-a-thon ordinance that allowed Hal J. Ross Enterprises to file for a license to hold  a “1937 Derby Show” that was described as combination of athletic contests. The application fee was $500.

    This was not the first event like this in Seal Beach. in 1930, the Anaheim Bay American Legion had held a 24-hour dance-a-thon at 8th Street and Ocean, but the Hal Ross event was going to last for weeks and would ultimately end prematurely due to legal issues. There will be more on this in a future post.

    For now, to give a little flavor of what these events were like, here’s the coming attractions trailer for “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?,”  a 1969 film adaptation of Horace McCoy’s novel of the same name, starring Jane Fonda and Michael Sarrazin. McCoy had worked as a bouncer at one of these events, so his novel was based on firsthand experience.

    Just imagine it’s Thursday night, August 26th, 1937, and similar entertainments are about to start in a large tent on a vacant patch of a land where Bay City Center on Pacific Coast Highway now stands.

  • July 20th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1940, the Long Beach Independent ran this ad for the Dovalis 101 Ranch House Cafe. We’ve posted 101 Ranch House ads before, but this one is from very early in its history, coming only three weeks after the the restaurant’s grand opening on June 28th.

    The new restaurant was owned by Nick Dovalis, a Greek immigrant who was born in Sparta in the Attika province on Christmas day in 1886. The 1930 census lists Dovalis as having immigrated to the United States in 1924, but other historical records show a Nick Dovalis working in the confectionary trade in the country much earlier. Maybe there was more than one Nick Dovalis working as a confectioner, but it seems unlikely.

    The earliest notice of Nick Dovalis is from 1909 in a brief newspaper story about his selling his half of the Olympia Candy Co. in Austin, Minnesota to his business partner. Next Nick Dovalis shows up in 1913 to marry Ethel Dellert in Iowa, and then Ethel Dovalis shows up in the Muskogee, Oklahoma 1917 city directory married to confectioner Nick Dovalis who later registers for the draft in 1917. Finally in 1922, a Nick Dovalis without an Ethel, is listed in the Long Beach city directory as working at a soda fountain on Pine Avenue.

    Restless Nick Dovalis may not have settled down permanently with Ethel, but he did settle down in Southern California for the rest of his life. At some point in the thirties, he open a Long Beach restaurant named the Olympia (just like the candy company) at Ocean Avenue and American Avenue (now Long Beach Boulevard).

    One intriguing tidbit about this period is that the Coca-Cola company once filed an injunction against Dovalis in 1932 for selling his own soda formula in his shop under the trademarked brand name of Coca-Cola. He was later fined $250 and given a suspended sentence in 1934 for ignoring the injunction against his selling more of his own special “Coca-Cola” mix.

    Dovalis expanded his restaurant empire by opening the Dovalis 101 Ranch House Cafe (one hopes with legitimate brand name sodas) on Pacific Coast Highway at 16th Street. Seal Beach must have agree with him because he bought a home on 13th Street and lived there until his death in 1967. The 101 Ranch House stayed in business until the mid-seventies.

  • July 15th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1950, the Long Beach Independent’s Round The Town column mentioned that trombonist Turk Murphy and his Dixieland crew were playing a long-term gig at the Garden of Allah and hoped “the building was a solid as the music.”

    Turk’s gig at the Garden of Allah started on July 1st when he took over for Pee Wee Hunt. A July 8 Round The Town column also mentioned Turk by mentioning rumors that “the “Garden of Allah out Seal Beach way is having foundation trouble. That old Dixieland man, Turk Murphy, has had the joint shaking for weeks. Regardless of whether the masonry can stand the jive, the customers never seem to get enough.”

  • July 2nd in Seal Beach History

    July_2_1935_Glide_Er_Inn_AdOn this date in 1935, the Santa Ana Register ran this ad for the Glide’er Inn restaurant. We ran an 1975 for the Glide’er Inn here, but this ad is for the  original location at Coast Highway and Bay Boulevard (now Pacific Coast Highway and Seal Beach Boulevard). In 1944, the Navy took over Anaheim Landing, and the Glide’er Inn relocated to 14th Street and Pacific Coast Highway, the current location of Mahé, You can see a 1943 aerial photo of the Glide’er Inn at its original location across from the Seal Beach Airport here.
