  • October 7th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1941, the Long Beach Independent reported that Sam’s Seafood at 2501 Pacific Coast Highway had recently opened a new building in the back to handle its overflow crowds of weekend diners. The new 30 by 94 feet addition could accommodate 200 patrons and also featured an orchestra and a floor show. The new addition would be christened The Neptune Room.

    On this date in 1971, the following ad ran in the Long Beach Independent for the Ranch House Restaurant.

    The ad offered fine dining and entertainment by Bill Clark, a pianist and organist who sang and played pop hits and Broadway showtunes at various local Long Beach restaurants like The Embers, Alexander’s, Lucy’s, and Hoefly’s.

  • September 29th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1977, the following ad ran in the Long Beach Independent.

    Before Ruby’s Diner and long after the scintillators were removed, Fisherman’s Wharf Restaurant served food at the end of the Seal Beach Pier, including an enticing Friday choice between a fish dinner or a spaghetti dinner for only $ 2.95 complete.
    More than forty years later, nothing is being served at the end of the Seal Beach pier.  A fire gutted the end of the pier on May 20, 2016, leaving nothing but a depressing view of the charred remains of a once prime dining spot in Seal Beach. Three years later the fire damage had finally been repaired, and the end of the pier officially re-opened on May 24th, 2019. When and if another restaurant will be built there remains an unanswered question.

  • September 28th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1946, Ralph Henry Lawrence, a 45 year old toolmaker from Clearwater plead guilty to a felonious assault charge and received ten years probation and was ordered to pay a $360 fine at the rate of $10 a month.

    This ad ran in the Long Beach Independent exactly five years to the day before Ralph Henry Lawrence’s day in court. There’s no special significance to this coincidence. It’s just fun to run old Sam’s Seafood advertisements.

    On July 13th Lawrence had attempted a hold-up of Sam’s Seafood Grotto. Instead of making a clean getaway with some loot, Lawrence was severely beaten by the restaurant’s owner, George B. Arvanitis.  The irony of pleading guilty to felonious assault when you were the one severely beaten perhaps contributed to the leniency of the sentence.

  • July 20th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1940, the Long Beach Independent ran this ad for the Dovalis 101 Ranch House Cafe. We’ve posted 101 Ranch House ads before, but this one is from very early in its history, coming only three weeks after the the restaurant’s grand opening on June 28th.

    The new restaurant was owned by Nick Dovalis, a Greek immigrant who was born in Sparta in the Attika province on Christmas day in 1886. The 1930 census lists Dovalis as having immigrated to the United States in 1924, but other historical records show a Nick Dovalis working in the confectionary trade in the country much earlier. Maybe there was more than one Nick Dovalis working as a confectioner, but it seems unlikely.

    The earliest notice of Nick Dovalis is from 1909 in a brief newspaper story about his selling his half of the Olympia Candy Co. in Austin, Minnesota to his business partner. Next Nick Dovalis shows up in 1913 to marry Ethel Dellert in Iowa, and then Ethel Dovalis shows up in the Muskogee, Oklahoma 1917 city directory married to confectioner Nick Dovalis who later registers for the draft in 1917. Finally in 1922, a Nick Dovalis without an Ethel, is listed in the Long Beach city directory as working at a soda fountain on Pine Avenue.

    Restless Nick Dovalis may not have settled down permanently with Ethel, but he did settle down in Southern California for the rest of his life. At some point in the thirties, he open a Long Beach restaurant named the Olympia (just like the candy company) at Ocean Avenue and American Avenue (now Long Beach Boulevard).

    One intriguing tidbit about this period is that the Coca-Cola company once filed an injunction against Dovalis in 1932 for selling his own soda formula in his shop under the trademarked brand name of Coca-Cola. He was later fined $250 and given a suspended sentence in 1934 for ignoring the injunction against his selling more of his own special “Coca-Cola” mix.

    Dovalis expanded his restaurant empire by opening the Dovalis 101 Ranch House Cafe (one hopes with legitimate brand name sodas) on Pacific Coast Highway at 16th Street. Seal Beach must have agree with him because he bought a home on 13th Street and lived there until his death in 1967. The 101 Ranch House stayed in business until the mid-seventies.

    On this date in 1964, the following ad for Surf Boards By Jack Haley ran in the Los Angeles Times.

    This is just one date in time from one man’s notable life. Jack Haley was and remains a Seal Beach institution. In his sixty-five years of life, He was so many things: family man, surfing pioneer, lifeguard, entrepreneur, mentor, and restaurateur. People who knew Jack Haley called him, “Mister Excitement.”

    Mister Excitement first came to prominence on September 22, 1959 when he became the first West Coast Surfing Champion. This was in the early long board days of the surfing culture before it blossomed into a multi-millionaire industry. The enthusiasm and personalities of young surfers like Haley, Blackie August, Rich Harbour, and so many others influenced the shape of that culture, and that influence is still felt today.

    But surfers need day jobs, and Jack Haley kept close to the waves and beach by becoming a Seal Beach lifeguard in the early sixties. If you’ve ever spoken to Seal Beach lifeguards, you know they have countless stories about their experiences. Two incidents from Jack Haley’s lifeguard days were noteworthy enough into the Long Beach Independent Press Telegram.

    The first is a typical lifeguard rescue story. Four surfers had been swept half a mile out to sea on a Sunday afternoon in February 1963. The teenagers lost their surfboards in the breaking waves at the mouth of the San Gabriel River where the ocean tides mixed with river’s current. Three of the surfers, teenaged friends from Whittier, were saved by boat, and it was uncertain when the story was written whether or not the fourth, not part of the Whittier group had made it to shore independently.

    “The surf out there was terrible,” said Lt. Lifeguard Haley. “When they lost their boards they couldn’t swim against the river’s current. They were rescued near the oil drilling island, which is a half-mile from shore.”

    According to Haley, it was the first time in ten years the waves were breaking beyond the end of the the quarter mile long Seal Beach pier — the sort of detail a seasoned surfer would note. In the newspaper story, Haley seems to be the source for the information about the rescue, but care was taken to also give credit to Seal Beach lifeguards Fred Miller and Tim Dorsey for other less striking and yet important swimmer and surfer rescues under rough conditions.

    At nightfall, the fourth surfer had still not been located, and the Coast Guard planned to resume searching the next day. There is no follow up story, so one hopes the surfer made it to shore, safe but unnoticed.

    The second story is little more unusual and takes places two months later in April 1963. Under the lovely headline of “Surfboard Terror Arrested At Sea,” the Long Beach Independent Press-Telegram of surfer Terry Lee Gardner of Garden Grove. Gardner had attached razor blades to the skag (rudder) of his surfboard and threatened to “cut to ribbons anyone who got in his way.”

    At the time, there were 150 surfers in the newly designated surfing area. Gardner tried to run his fellow surfer down until the Seal Beach police arrived and ordered him to shore. Instead of complying, Gardener paddled out to sea.

    Haley set out after Gardner in a rowboat, and the Long Beach Harbor Patrol boats were called out. When Haley and the patrol boats caught up with Gardner, he was frantically trying to remove the razor blades from his board. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

    Not every workday in a lifeguard’s life are as dramatic as these, but rescuing, life-saving, maintaining a safe beach and waters, and aiding beachgoers and swimmers are regular events, whether newspapers take note or not. A single lifeguard can have an immeasurable, but significant impact on thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of lives during his or her career.

    One would think being the first West Coast Surfing Champion and a Seal Beach lifeguard would be enough for one lifetime, but Jack Haley had an entrepreneurial spirit. Riding the wave of his success as a surfing champion, he opened his own surfboard shop in Seal Beach in 1961.

    In 1963, two months after helping nab the Surfboard Terror of Garden Grove, Haley and his brother Mike opened a surfing school.

    Next on Jack Haley’s list of accomplishments came in 1965 when he opened Captain Jack’s in Sunset Beach. The first few years of business were a struggle for Haley and his family, but over half a century later, you can still get a table at Captain Jack’s, and enjoy a cocktail and a nice steak or seafood meal with a complimentary basket of bread. Other long-lasting local restaurants like Sam’s Seafood, the Ranch House, and the Glide ‘er Inn have slipped into history, fondly remembered and gone, but Captain Jack’s is still flourishing and is still run by the Haley family.

    In 1997, Haley spearheaded a successful campaign to privately fund construction of a lifeguard station at the base of the Seal Beach pier, and the station was named for him. In July 1999, Haley was inducted into the Surfer Hall of Fame.

    For all the drive for success and excellence and variety of activities that Jack Haley poured into life, he did not neglect his family: his wife, Jeanette; his mother, Virginia, another notable Seal Beach citizen; and children, Tim, currently manager of Captain Jack’s, Sondra, and Jack Jr., who played two seasons for the Lakers and passed away in 2015.

    In a 2015 Los Angeles Times profile celebration of Captain Jack’s 50th anniversary, Tim Haley recalled various family outings like cruises to Catalina on the yacht, Christina, ski trips to Mammoth, and motorcycle rides to Enseneda. The family would have dinner together every night.

    On March 26, 2000, Jack Haley passed away at age sixty-five to cancer. True to form, Mister Excitement had planned his own beach party memorial with Hawaiian shirts and mariachi music. “He demanded there not be a tear at the party. He wanted it to celebrate his life,” said Tim Haley in the Los Angeles Times obituary. Later, Tim added, Jack Haley’s ashes would be spread in the sea at Maui and Cabo San Lucas, “so he will continue surfing.”

    P.S. Because it’s come up more than a few times over the years, Seal Beach’s Jack Haley was not related to Jack Haley, the song and dance man best known for his role as the Tin Man in the 1939 MGM musical, The Wizard of Oz. Or Bill Haley of “Rock Around The Clock” fame. Let’s stop spreading these myths, folks!

  • May 24th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1963, an ad ran in the Long Beach Independent for Seal Beach’s Hawaiian themed restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway.

    No, not Sam’s Seafood. This restaurant was The Eddie Bush Mauna Kea and was located at 1600 Pacific Coast Highway. 

    Readers of this blog might remember that this was the address for the Dovalis 101 Ranch House. The original owner Nick Dovalis launched the restaurant in 1940 as covered in this post.  In late 1963, Bill Smyrniotis and his brothers took over what was now known as the 101 Ranch House and introduced a Greek flair to the menu and live entertainment as recounted in this post.

    But briefly between Dovalis and Smyrniotis, Mr. and Mrs. Don Chandler owned the restaurant with entertainer Eddie Bush, and it was remodeled into Hawaiian themed restaurant. It had three nightly floor shows (except for Mondays) featuring island music by the Wally Palmeira Trio (Wally Palmeira, Ronnie Salci, and George Kainapau), co-owner and then Seal Beach resident Eddie Bush, and two Tahitian dancers.

    Perhaps the location was bad or the restaurant was underfinanced, but the last mention of Eddie Bush Mauna Kea was in early July 1963 — a bare four months after its soft launch on March 1st. By November, Eddie Bush was performing at Mr. C’s on Pacific Coast Highway.

    This is not surprising. Eddie Bush had been a fixture of the Long Beach Hawaiian music scene for years before the ill-fated Mauna Kea, performing mostly at The Hawaiian a few blocks east of the traffic circle. His show biz career spread much wider and including radio, movies, and television. He died in Long Beach in 1969 at age fifty-eight.

    After Eddie Bush and Bill Smyrniotis, there would be a variety of new owners, and the restaurant would come to be known as simply the Ranch House Restaurant for most of the seventies before being renamed Rum Runners. Rum Runners lasted through the eighties before the owners declared bankruptcy in 1989. The building was demolished in May 1992.

  • April 16th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1971, the Long Independent ran the following ad for a popular new Seal Beach restaurant that had been open a scant six months at 201 Main Street.

    Nearly fifty years later, Walt’s Wharf, now a Main Street institution in Seal Beach, still serves fresh fish to happy fans of fine seafood dining. (You can still call the same phone number above for reservations.)

    On this date in 1975, the Long Beach Independent ran the following advertisement:

    March_29_1974_Green_Pepper_Ad-3The newspaper had run a rave mini-review of the Green Pepper the day before, declaring “For a masterpiece tostada, try the deluxe model, $1.95 at the Green Pepper Mexican Restaurant, 209 Main St., Seal Beach. It is for the ‘one who has much hunger,’ because it is a whopper with meat, beans, grated cheese, mounds of salad and house dressing topped with guacamole. The Green Pepper (closed Sundays) is owned by Henry Lucero and his bride, Betty. It is open for luncheon and dinner offering fresh, colorful Mexican combination dinners, from $2.60, fancy Mexican appetizers, luncheon combos from $1.40; Mexican omelettes, sandwiches, wine margaritas and Mexican beers.”

    The Green Pepper and Hank Lucero are gone. After the Green Pepper closed in the early nineties, 209 Main Street was occupied by BJ’s Pizzeria and then Woody’s Diner. Today Avila’s El Ranchitos serves meals in the space where the Green Pepper once operated. But many longtime Seal Beachers still remember Hank Lucero, the Deluxe Tostada, and all the fine Mexican meals they enjoyed at the Green Pepper.

  • March 18th in Seal Beach History

    On this date in 1956 at 2 p.m., on the spot where Bay Boulevard met Electric Avenue, a dedication ceremony was held for a monument designating Anaheim Landing as a historical landmark. The marker read:

    ANAHEIM LANDING After the establishment of the Mother Colony at Anaheim in 1857, a wharf and warehouse were constructed at the mouth of Anaheim Creek to serve the Santa Ana Valley. Treacherous entrance conditions caused several disasters, but steamers loaded with wine, wool and other cargo continued to dock here regularly. Use of the seaport began to decline in 1875 with the incursion of the Southern Pacific Railroad into the area. By 1890, the landing was no longer in operation.

    (This was not the first Anaheim Landing. The landing was originally established in 1864 on Alamitos Bay, a more ideal port for shipping, but when an 1867 flood filled the bay with silt and severely limited ocean access, the landing was relocated to what is now known as Anaheim Bay. Local historian Larry Strawther has established that the original landing was approximately where the Island Village tract is today.)

    Eleven years earlier almost to the day of the dedication ceremony, Anaheim Landing’s days as a civilian shipping port, a recreational destination, and residential neighborhood ended when the U.S. Navy took possession of Anaheim Bay and Anaheim Landing to install a weapons depot. On the other side of the fence behind the marker, munitions were loaded and unloaded to and from Navy ships serving in the Pacific Ocean.

    On the civilian side of the fence, a crowd celebrated Anaheim Landing’s past. Perhaps some in that crowd had been Anaheim Landing residents and felt wistful recalling earlier days of swimming, boating, and fishing in the bay before the Navy removed their homes and cottages and dredged it.

    Installing the marker had been a community affair. The project was instigated by the Senior and Junior Women’s Clubs of Seal Beach. Mrs. Bernice V. Smith and Mrs. Sven Lindstrom researched the historical data. Buell Brown designed the seven-foot high monument. Frank Curtis poured the foundation. The local Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops and Veterans organizations gathered the stones that were used in the monument, and surplus stones formed a crescent shaped rock garden on either side of the monument.

    The theme for the ceremony was “Preserve the Past for the Future.” Scout troops presented mixed colors, Mrs. Noel Chadwick gave the devotional, and the Woman’s Club chorus sang a musical piece under the direction of Mrs. Clyde Spencer.

    Officiating the ceremony were Willis Warner, chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Lee Winterton and William Gallienne of the Associated Chambers of Commerce, Admiral John McKinney, William Hynds of the recreation development committee, M.K. Hillyard of the marker committee, and Mrs. Albert Sylvia of the Woman’s Club of Seal Beach, and Mrs. Larry Howard of the Junior Woman’s Club of Seal Beach.

    It must have been fine and proud Saturday event for all parties involved.

    The Anaheim Landing monument still stands today, but somewhat diminished. Bay Boulevard is now Seal Beach Boulevard, the monument was moved to make room for a public works lot, and the rock garden is gone, replaced by a couple of bushes and a bus stop.
