June 21st in Seal Beach History

On this date in 1940, The Seal Beach Lions Club held its first annual election after flourishing though its inaugural year of 1939.

Seal Beach Community Church pastor F. Harold Essert replaced founding president of the Lions Club, J. C. Felts. Max Henkey, Dr. Homer De Sadeleer, and Mayor Elmer J. Hughes were elected first, second, and third vice presidents. James Arnerich was elected Lion Tamer and J. S. McLean was re-elected Tail Twister. A. V. Stegen and H. Mendenhall were voted in as new directors while Lee Benno and Frank Moran were holdover directors.

Nearly eight decades later, the Seal Beach Lions Club also remains an active and vital force in  the Seal Beach community. I think everyone in Seal Beach should experience a lively and affable Seal Beach Lions Club at least once in his or her life. If you ever get invited to one, don’t decline the invitation.

    This news article dated June 21 1940 is very interesting to me personally Pastor Harold Essert married my parents in 1938 and 22 years later married me and my wife.1960. Doctor De Saddeler was our family Doctor. My dad worked worked for Jim Arnerich (GLIDER INN). A. V. Stegen is my uncle by marriage. Thanks for your post. Bob Black

    Max Henkey was the husband of Dorothy. They were relatives I think of mine. They came to visit my English family in the 1950s. We have pictures of them visiting my grandparents. My Uncle, who was a child at the time is visting next month and we’re driving through Seal Beach. If anyone knows or is related to the Henkey’s or their descendants it would be great to meet up. We may be distant cousins. I believe they had 2 daughters and Dorothy passed away in 1980. Thanks, Iain

    Iain,
    Is it okay for me to share your query on the Seal Beach and the Seal Beach Lions Club facebook? I don’t know any Henky relatives personally, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still some around locally. Even if we don’t find relatives, there’s a chance there might be someone who remembers the Henkeys personally.
