July 10th in Seal Beach History

On this date in 1959, the Long Beach Independent ran the following advertisement for the opening of Boatswain’s Locker. Note that the address given is 10 Bolsa Avenue.

Today’s locals think of Bolsa Avenue ending at Main Street, but if you look at a map of Seal Beach, you’ll see that Marina Drive continues the path of Bolsa Avenue to the west end on town and crosses the bridge to join Long Beach’s North Marina Drive. Before the Long Beach Marina was built in the late fifties and early sixties, Marina Drive was known as Bolsa Avenue.

    And Bolsa in Seal Beach is the same Bolsa in Huntigton Beach.. The road goes through the navy base.

      Oh, absolutely. That’s a great point to make. Much of the early history of Seal Beach, and, in fact, Orange County, has to do with roads and highways.

      Oh my goodness. I never actually put the two (or three) together. Just looked at Google Maps; having never been on the base very far (a high school buddy’s dad was the commanding officer so visited — briefly — a couple of times), didn’t realize that there was Bolsa running straight through, disconnected at each end of the depot.

      Maps also revealed that Bolsa east of PCH apparently used to not turn to become Main — there’s a straight line that would connect it with the westernmost part of Bolsa/Marina Drive.

    As a child I remember riding from Midway City to Seal Beach on Bolsa with my grand Parents before the navy base closed it off.. ( Yes I’m older than dirt )

      I’m slightly younger than dirt. And thinking about it more, I remember that on the base side of Seal Beach Blvd, across from where Bolsa “ended”, there was a big gate where the road continued off into the distance. Looking at the map reminded me that they put in new military housing there after I’d left town.
